I rolled out of bed and landed on the floor with a thump. Why was I excited? I hadn't been excited since Mum had died.
Then it hit me, yesterday Uncle Jack had come to visit. He had promised to take me away. Away from the house where Mum had died. The house where Dad drank all the money away.
I didn't yet know where we were going. Uncle Jack had said it was better I didn't know in case Dad somehow found out.
You see the thing is that I am not supposed to be going with Uncle Jack. He was supposed to visit though. When he heard how hard things are for me he offered to take me away with me.
I hurriedly dressed and raced into the kitchen where Uncle Jack was eating some bread and cheese.
"Are Dianne, you are awake. Quickly grabbed your things before your father awakes. We must leave now," Uncle Jack told me.
"Does Dad know where we are going?" I asked.
"He knows of it, but he won't think you are there, so don't worry," Uncle Jack assured me. He frowned and then smiled. "Yes you could join the girls."
"What girls?" I asked.
"Don't worry, just talking to myself. Go get your things," Uncle Jack ordered.
I was soon downstairs with all my belongings. We crept out the front door and into Uncle Jack's car.
As we sped down the road I decided to ask him if he could now tell me where we were going.
"Yes, now I can. We are going to the SHOG or the Secret Hunters of Geron," Uncle Jack told me. "Don't worry, they are very nice. I have been one of them for ages."
"What do they do? I have never heard of them," I confessed.
"I should hope not. Didn't you hear me? They are the Secret Hunters!" Uncle Jack cried. "They go around keeping and eye on everything in this world and stopping all the evil they can."
"Wow! Sounds like something out of a book," I muttered.
"Don't let Ella hear you say that," Uncle Jack laughed.
"Who is Ella?" I asked.
"She is the head of the most important part of our group in this area. The group of kids," Uncle Jack answered.
"Why kids? Why are they the most important?" I asked.
"No one thinks a child could do any harm. They can go out in public and ask questions and another reason is people don't worry about what they say in front of children. Adults can't get away with it and anyway most adults in SHOG are outlaws," Uncle Jack explained.
"Oh, why are they?" I wondered.
"They have been mistaken for making the crimes they were trying to stop," Uncle Jack told me.
"Can I be part of SHOG?" I begged.
"If you pass the test and I am going to make sure you do," Uncle Jack told me. "I am thinking that with some training you could be invaluable to us."
I hope you like that! It's all I have so far.
